I have been studying mandarin for more than 8 years in my spare time. When I listen to the
advanced lessons at chinesepod.com I can understand 98%.

I am now stationed temporary at a university in China. Sometimes when the guys at the lab where I
work speak to each other, my listening comprehension is close to 0%. I can even be difficult to
hear that it is mandarin.

The problem with for example chinesepod and other sources is that most of it is recorded in
perfectly pronounced mandarin. This is good for beginners but not for advanced students. I'm
therefor looking for some study material recording in regional accents of mandarin.

getting used to.

Where in China are you, or where are your colleagues from? Maybe some people here can give you
some pointers on what they would pronounce differently. That's assuming they're speaking Mandarin
to each other: if they are all from the same non-Mandarin-speaking area, they might be speaking in
fangyan and then it'd be strange if you did understand.
Is this your first time in China? If so, I think it's not so strange that you have some difficulty
understanding. Don't be discouraged. Just keep listening, when you get used to their accent
(assuming it's just an accent), things will get better.

bingo! As a member in this forum put it in another thread, bad (accented) mandarin is everywhere
in china and it's almost impossible to communicate with everyone with perfect mandarin accent.

The accents of mandarin can be divided into these categories. If your mandarin is good enough, go
to the following area for a month and you should find it fairly easy to adapt to local mandarin
accent (not dialects)

雲貴川 (Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou) -- The dialects (西南官話) in these areas are very close
to putonghua. My friend from Sichuan often speak Sichuanese to another guy from Kunming and they
are okay to communicate with each other.

廣東/廣西/湖南/ 湖北/ 台灣 (南部) - Their dialects are very different from putonghua
and different from each other, but their putonghua shares many common "southern" characteristics
-- always confused with xi, si , chi, zhi , ji , and "r" sound is very light.

東北, 江浙 should have their accents too, but i have no ideas about it.

Sorry, but you have to be kidding. Have you read the security reports for the middle east or
Africa?

Even regaridng Asia, I chose China over some other countries because of the safety issue. Just do
a search for travel advisory or whatever. It shouldn't be too hard to find.

And to be honest, my motiviation to settle abroad is more about 1- getting out of an obnoxious
culture, 2- seeing the rest of the world, and 3- because I can live for about 1/4th the cost.

People go to Asia because people can earn money as foreigners there. Many western companies pay
gold to make people go there and help them do business.

There aren't that many expats in Vietnam, Burma, North Korea or Mongolia either. But Dubai and
Cape Town are choking full of expats.

It's a money issue. Dubai has more expats per capita than Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong or Tokyo.
It's not even close.

Wow! I have the NPCR DVD, and I thought when I saw her I was trying to figure out if she was

My girlfriend said that she sounded like a foreigner Or at least that she had a detectable accent
on the NPCR DVDs. But she IS pretending to be an intermediate level student, so she is probably
speaking differently than she would in a normal situation (exaggerated tones, etc.)

I can confirm that the Code2000 font implements all the Unicode-characters U+31C0 - U+31E3. So
with this font is is possible to view all the CJK-strokes in the Unicode-standard - and that is
very good news indeed. See screen shot below.

It is IMHO however not an extremely beautiful implementation. It seems to be a
'printed-character'-style font, but the 'dot' at the end of 'heng' is smaller than it would
normally be. Many of the strokes looks a little too... cheap ...inconsistent...and perhaps as
mixture of the two main character types? 'dian' is longer, slimmer and less curved than I would
normally see in 'printed'-type characters.

Another problem is that when rendering some characters at 9-10 CPI on my monitor, such as the
aforementioned character with the O-stroke, parts of the characters are not visible. The same
characters are clearly displayed using other "normal" Chinese fonts.

I'll continue searching for another implementation or two .

About to the 'O-stroke and the 㔔-character':

Various Chinese people I've spoken to seems to suggest two different possible explanations:

1. The O-stroke could be a placeholder indicating a place (space) to write another (normal)
character component.

2. The 㔔-character is a character bordering Korean language, and this page seems to suggest that
it could be the Korean name 'kang'.

I would put my money on the last explanation. But both suggestions could perhaps explain why it's
difficult to locate the character in a Chinese dictionary.

No, Code2000 doesn't look very attractive on screen, does it.

As to the ISO document and Unicode classification, remember that these implement not Chinese but
CJK coding, as in Chinese-Japanese-Korean. So of course they would code a stroke used only in
Korean.

Alright, I've finally gotten around to attaching something.

I was considering trying over and over again until it was perfect before posting but I'd like to

I wasn't satisfied with my first attempt so here's a second one, which I think it much better.

I'm not a native speaker, or even a fluent speaker for that matter, but here is my advice anyway.
I'm leaving blank the words I don't know.

1. 招呼 is fine, but in mainland it tends to be pronounced as zhāo hu rather than zhāo hū.
2. 溫和 is correct tonally, but the 'e' in wēn should sound like the vowel sound in the English
"wood" or "would" (at least in American English) rather than that of "when." The Pinyin -en
normally rhymes with "sun," but it has that 'oo' (as in "wood" not "food") in this case because
the syllable wen is really w + un.
3. 剛纔 is better, but your first syllable sounds a little bit like gēng to me.
4. 夥伴 is good.
5. 總算 is good.
6.
7. 清新 is good.
8. 隨著 sounded like suí zhè. It should be pronounced suí zhe because 著 is always in the
neutral tone when read as zhe.
9. 微波 sounds good, but ZDT says it means "microwave" rather than "ripple."
10. 圍 is good.

12. 蔚藍 is good.
13. 廣闊 is good.

19. 失望 doesn't sound like there's enough stress on the first tone of 失.

I took a Chinese class and the teacher had a special computer font that had the normal Chinese
characters, but underneath, it had built in pinyin! In other words, not only did the font display
the Chinese character, it had the tiny pinyin underneath. I wanted to buy that font but she said
she purchased it in Taiwan. Does anyone know where I can buy or download this font on the internet?

But of course, sometimes some characters have more than one pronunciation. But even if these few
words had the wrong pinyin, it was still helpful in learning Chinese.

Hi all,

Does anyone know of a free software program (or on-line tool) that allows learners to speak and
records their voices then displays the sound they make in graphic form so that it can be compared
against what it should be like?

I am thinking here of something that would help learners to literally see the tone they make and
compare it to how it should be.

If anything, I would imagine that's referring to publications/official documents and the like,
rather than individuals.

Ah, I guess my 1984 allusions might have more relevance than I thought...
Speaking of Wikipedia, the article on Internet censorship in the PRC
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship_in_the_People's_Republic_of_China> says that the
web browser Gollum, which strangely enough only loads web pages if they're from Wikipedia,
accidentally allows users to bypass China's censorship of Wikipedia. The article says that the PRC
hasn't blocked a Google search for the software (or maybe it means the web site
<http://gollum.easycp.de>), but I don't know if that's true. I also don't know if it's illegal in
China to view Wikipedia (using the said software, for example).

Well, the Chinese government doesn't want you to go to Wikipedia (that's why it's blocked), but
they won't go out of their way to arrest you for visiting the site.

Whatever name you have, everyone is going to write it in simplified when you're on the mainland,
and in traditional when you're on Taiwan. You don't really get a choice in this. What you can do
is have business cards made in the font you prefer, and write your name the way you prefer. For a
character like Ma, both versions will be readily recognized on either side of the Strait.

The government wants everyone to write everything in simplified. So all papers, all computers, all
cellphones etc usually know only simplified. But the police is not going to look over your
shoulder for everything you write, or fine you for writing traditional.

Here's how the story goes:

I have a friend from Taipei who now lives in the US near me. She drove us to the mall and
encountered the typical "parking lot crisis," where drivers have to compete for parking spaces.
Well, we found a driver who was supposedly backing out. Our hopes were up and our eyes were set on
that lot, but we were "fooled." The driver was actually just adjusting the orientation of his car
and after backing up a bit, returned to the original position. Aggravated, my friend said,
"好jian4喔" and drove away to find another parking space.

Does anyone have a clue as to which jian4 she is referring to and what it means?

I'm guessing it would be this: 贱

It is usually used in a joking manner or if someone is really upset. You can also call someone a
贱人. For example, if someone says a really stupid joke, pun or cold joke, you can say,
你这个贱人！

贱 means cheap, despicable, slutty or kinda loser-ish.

Enjoy using this awesome word!

chinese kids acquire new vocabulary through speaking and reading, too. you probably dont believe
me when i say learning to write chinese as a native kid is almost effortless in a sense and does

i understand it is quite difficult for adults to learn them, but it's not impossible. i think if
you chose to learn the language, learn it in its entirety. or would you rather china throw away
chinese and use english as its national language that would make everybody happy.

I think its interesting that the ability to write characters can atrophy with disuse. My
boyfriend, a Chinese English major, spent 4 months living with me, during which we spoke almost
exclusively English, and he was reading novels in English rather than Chinese. He told me he had
started making more frequent mistakes in his written Chinese, and had forgotten completely how to
write some characters. He remarked that he needed to start reading more in Chinese again to keep
his vocabulary up.

In a language like English, you can't really forget how to write or read. Your handwriting can
become more sloppy, but you're not going to completely lose your ability to express yourself in
writing. In Chinese, if you do not practice, you will forget characters, a fact which alone gives
it a degree of difficulty. You cannot be lazy with Chinese and maintain a good written vocabulary.

Quest, I more or less agree with what you are saying with regards to Chinese children learning the
language.

Another point is that even after all the effort invested in learning Chinese characters they can
sometimes be forgotten. Working with my Taiwanese boss, it is surprising how often he forgets how
to write a character. (I am sure he still knows how to read them).

The difference between characters and words written using an alphabet is that it is possible to

would learn and what a Chinese student would learn in their respective primary schools. It was
found out that the Chinese student would read only about 300,000 characters in six years; while
the former Soviet Union student would read about 800,000 characters in four years. One of the
headaches of textbook compilers for grade one and two students in China is that the content
selection is severely restricted when the compilers have to come up with something intelligent and
meaningful with just a few hundred characters that the students can possibly absorb.

Of course I have heard of Chan Sai 美. I don't have to look it up and I can type his name in

Accessing Credit Cards and Personal Checks

Joint accounts not permitted in Chinese banks. No Chinese bank offers joint bank accounts for
couples though new western banks are starting to enter the market. Most international banks
require a large deposit (HSBC 100,000) for personal banking. This partly due to the undeveloped
virtually non-existent credit history system.

One Bank account may be able to have two credit cards linked to that bank account. Most Chinese
credit cards work like western debit cards where Chinese customers must first deposit a set amount
of money the minimum is usually 6,000 Yuan and then the credit card can withdraw from from that
account. You still need to pay back money to return the level to 6,000 yuan each month or you will
pay interest on the difference.
Credit cards usually have a pin number that you will need to input. The exception to this in the
Merchant's Bank, which simply requires the signature.
Credit cards are usually can be used in large supermarkets, upscale restaurants or hotels.Some big
department stores also accept them.

[top]Personal Checks

Personal checks are very rare and hardly used. In the case where you want to write a check to
yourself and cash it at the bank. It will take at least one month to get the cash. The check must
be authenticated by phone and then it is sent to the US bank. The US back then send the money to
the the Chinese bank with processed check. The Chinese bank will call you to fill out some final
forms and deposit the cash in your account. The same fees for exchanging money plus some banks
have Check processing fees.

Cashiers Checks are sometimes used to pay for big items such as cars and conferences. There are
occassions when people use suitcases to carry cash to the dealerships to pay for the cars as well.
Cash counting machines are common in banks to deal with the number of paper bills they highest
denomination being the 100 yuan note.

I use Cool Edit, I have that since ages. However, it's not freeware. For FREE I suggest Audacity.
I haven't tried it, so let me know.....

Another vote for audacity - very useful tool and very easy to use. Maybe takes a little time to
figure out what you can do with it, but worth the effort. If you do a search on audacity you'll
find previous comments about it.

There's also a portable version of Audacity. No install required, so you can carry it around on a
USB key.

Was going to write more about audacity yesterday but didn't have time.

Audacity is useful as it lets you lay out multiple soundtracks on one page, lets you listen to
one, some or all of them at one time, lets you copy and paste bits of sound around the same way
you do with text in Word, and you can save it all as a project file so it's all there when you
come back to it later.

As an example, you could have a recording from your textbook in mp3 format. You open it with
audacity and listen to it a few times. Then you record yourself reading the same line. Then you
mute the textbook version and listen to yourself, try to spot what's wrong then rerecord minus
(hopefully) the mistakes. Then you compare your second version with the model and realize you are
still getting one sound wrong. So you highlight just that bit of audio and listen to it 10 times,
comparing it with your version. You're still not quite sure what's going on, so you slow it down
by 50% and that helps a bit. So you record your third version, and while it isn't perfect you feel
fairly happy with it. Then you're tired so you save it and go to bed. The next morning you open it
up again and review your first, second and third attempts with fresh ears, taking note of the
changes you made for future reference.

I am not sure about Audacity, but CoolEdit has a "de-noise" function. It works really great on old
tapes to get rid of the often strong background hiss noise.

I think Audacity can do that too. It would be great for the FSI fans out there.....

An oil painting, Yu Tang Chun Nuan (Spring Comes to the Hall) drawn by
late artist Chen Yifei, was sold at 11 million yuan at an auction fair
held in Shanghai last month, breaking his previous personal selling
record set on December 16, last year.

Chinanews, July 18 �C An oil painting, Yu Tang Chun Nuan (Spring Comes to
the Hall) drawn by late artist Chen Yifei, was sold at 11 million yuan at
an auction fair held in Shanghai last month, breaking his previous
personal selling record set on December 16, last year. The soaring price
of this painting boosted the sales of the Chinese oil paintings overall,
which had for a long time been not considered as anything but the
mainstream art type in the auction market.
The painting Yu Tang Chun Nuan was sold at the Shanghai Hongsheng Auction
Company. It is one of the artist��s best products in his early collection
that depicts the life of debauchery in Old Shanghai. The painting,
measuring 169.5 centimeters long and 242.5 centimeters wide, is also the
biggest one in the entire array of the artist��s works. The painting
vividly depicts the luxury life in the Old Shanghai entertainment circle.
Set with an orange color background, the painting reflects the different
expressions of eleven people sitting around a red sandal wood round
table. The people in the painting are sitting, standing, putting a hand
under the chin, gazing, or meditating. On the left corner, an actor
dressed in the female of the demure type covers her face with a long
sleeve, imitating the typical image at the Peking opera Magnolia
Fistulosa.
Insiders say that Chinese oil painting market has begun to enter into a
booming business and investment of these paintings will be profitable.
Since the 1990s, Chinese oil painting market has remained active. One
reason is that traditional Chinese paintings, long regarded as the
mainstream for Chinese art collection, have been sold at lower prices
than oil paintings since many problems have emerged in this market.
Secondly, over hundreds of years, Chinese oil painting has developed to
become a unique school of art. Many products, which reflect contemporary
spirit and are worth buying, have begun to emerge. Many auction companies
have held fairs to sell Chinese oil paintings.
However, an expert from the Guangzhou Arts and Crafts Shop says much
still needs to be done in the Chinese oil painting market, and measures
have to be taken to prevent fake products. He suggests that China should
learn from international practice to set up a registration system in the
oil painting market. In addition, relevant laws and regulations should be
made to standardize the selling activities of art galleries and auction
companies. In addition, the agent system in the art market has not been
set up in China yet and the dealership system is still immature in China.
This has constrained Chinese art market from developing further. In light
of this situation, Chinese should introduce some advanced managerial
experiences from abroad.

square kilometers of land territory, China��s total air field reaches
10.9 million square kilometers. However, under the current air traffic
management system, a large part of the air resources haven't been
effectively used. This has become a bottleneck constraining China's
aviation industry from expanding further.��
The statement was made by Tian Sen, chairman of the China Modern Society
Research Center. As a professor much interested in China��s aviation
reform, Tian said that changes should be made in China��s air traffic
management system. He said Chinese airline companies and relative
official departments should work together to think of a way to
effectively use air resources, in order to boost domestic aviation
industry and make it work for the nation's economic development.
He also urged that China should promote low-cost aviation, better utilize
air resources and create a favorable environment for the development of
low-cost aviation, which he said would have a promising future in China.
Tian, now getting on for eighty, has just returned from a lecture tour in
Britain. In recent interviews given to the Beijing local media, what he
talked most often was the low-cost aviation. He said that low-cost
aviation had now accounted for one-third of the market share in Europe
and the Americas, and within the next five years, the figure could climb
to even half of the market share. Many Asian countries also have begun to
promote low-cost aviation. It can be said that low-cost aviation is an
inevitable trend for the world��s aviation industry, he predicted.
However, as a large country, China lags behind in developing its low-cost
aviation. He said that China��s aviation transportation capacity appears
to be excessive. However, this seemingly excessive transportation
capacity only indicates that effective demands are insufficient at
present. To put it in other words, the expensive airfare has constrained
the aviation market from expanding further. If low-cost aviation is
promoted in China, its aviation market will be activated. At the same
time, more common people will also be able to afford to travel by air,
enjoying the benefits of China��s opening-up and reform policy.

Chinanews, Beijing, June 30 - In these two days, many travelers went to
the Beijing railway station to buy Qinghai-Tibet railway tickets. They
would like to experience the fresh feeling of entering Tibet on board a
train, but fear that there is no sufficient oxygen supply up on the
Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Relevant experts indicated that adequate
preparation had been made in this area. The train has a reliable oxygen
supply system. Toxic gases would not be generated during the process of
producing the oxygen, and the amount of oxygen in the railway carriages
would not be affected significantly when the train door is opened as the
train pulls in at a station.
Experts stated that in order to deal with the oxygen deficiency problem
in the high altitude environment, Qinghai-Tibet trains are specially
equipped with oxygen supply systems, with two sets in every compartment.
One set provides oxygen supply through the method of diffusion. It mixes
the high-oxygen air produced by oxygen generators and those from air
conditioning systems and sends them to every corner in the compartments
through delivery conduits. In this way, the oxygen content in each
compartment reaches 23.5%, and could go as high as 25% when needed. The
other set is a centralized oxygen supply system. Every passenger is able
to directly breathe in high-concentration oxygen through special openings
and oxygen masks. It is designed to satisfy special passengers' demands
for high-concentration oxygen in the oxygen-deficient environment up on
the plateau.
Experts specifically pointed out that when passengers get in and out of
the train at the plateau area, loss of some oxygen is inevitable due to
the fact that the carriage doors are open and there is a concentration
differential for the oxygen inside and outside the train. However, there
is no need to be overly worried about this problem. When the doors are
closed, the oxygen concentration inside the train would return to the
original level in less than half an hour, because the oxygen supply
system keeps working all the time.

Chinanews, Dingzhou, June 20 �C China would encounter three population
peaks in terms of the total population, the labor force and the aging
population in the first half of the century and some obstacles would
still remained solving the population problem in general, Zhang Weiqing,
Director of the State Commission for Population and Family Planning said
Sunday.
Zhang said during a seminar on population and family planning that
China��s population would keep strong inertial increase with the total
population rising by 8 million to 10 million annually in the next few
decades but the general quality level of the population was would be too
low to adapt to the fierce competition in overall national strength.
In addtion, the huge population of the labor force would make the
employment situation worse and the growing number of aging population
would present a great pressure on China��s social security system.
Moveover, there would be several important factors threatening the
harmony of the soceity as the birth ratio of boys to girls would remain
at a high level, the increasing number of ��floating population�� of
migrants would challeng the rellocation of public resources, the gap
between town and country would continue widening and the poverty-stricken
population would remain large. The safety risk of population therefore
could not be underestimated.
Zhang said the country should firstly overcome the barrier of the concept
and system and explore the trend and characteristics of the development
of the population in the new age.
He said that the major obstacles in system at present were the unsound
macro control mechanism of population development and that of the public
administration, the unsound incentive mechanism to keep the birth rate at
a low level and the unsound social security and motility mechanism
commensurate with the development of the population, which would render
the population and family planning work unable to adapt not only to the
requirements for the transformation of government functions and the
establishment of a government with the rule of law, but also to the
diversified demands of the massed. Hence it is essential to deepen the
reform of administrative system of the population and family planning.

Numerous high-tech devices to be used for 2008 Olympics

Chinanews, Jun. 6 �C A member of the security team for the 2008 Beijing
Olympic Games recently said that based on their judgment, people that
intended to commit crimes during the Olympic Games should be capable of
using high technological equipment. This required that the security team
should also be more vigilant and learn more knowledge about how to use
high-tech counter devices.
The Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau has recently sent hundreds
of policemen to Britain, Germany, Australia, Canada, etc, to receive
trainings that aim to improve their English proficiency and professional
skills.
Meanwhile, the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States has
also started to allocate some security force for the 2008 Beijing Olympic
Games. The UN Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute and the
European Police Office have also entered into close contact with the
Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau to discuss issues about
cooperation between international public security forces for large
international activities.
A staff member from the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau said
they would buy some highly-advanced portable electronic sensors from the
United States to help police officers to identify suspects. U.S. soldiers
in Iraq have recently started to use such devices, which can detect drug
remains and gunpowder left on the bodies of the terrorists and send
warnings whenever necessary.
Beijing will build 41 training fields and 31 stadiums for the Olympic
Games. These, together with the Olympic Village, the residential area for
the Olympic organizing committee, and the Olympic parks require that
hundreds of high-tech devices such as the security check gates, X-ray
machines, explosive detectors, and vehicle checking equipment be
installed. At present, installation work of these devices is well under
way.

BEIJING, June 2 - The upcoming summit meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation
Organization (SCO) will be a "milestone" that marks a new stage for the
development of the 5-year-old organization, the chief of the regional
group said here Thursday.
During the June 15 summit meeting, slated for Shanghai, the heads of
state of the member countries will review the SCO's achievements and in
its construction and development over the past five years, said SCO
Secretary-General Zhang Deguang.
The organization, established in Shanghai in 2001, comprises China,
Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Since 2004, it
has accepted Mongolia, Iran, Pakistan and India as observers.
The six heads of state will also draw up the future developmentgoals and
tasks of the organization, Zhang said in an exclusive interview with
Xinhua.
The member nations have invited leaders of the four observer countries to
attend the meeting, in addition to President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai
who will come as guest of the host country.
The leaders of some international organizations will also be invited for
the first time to attend a summit meeting of the regional group.
As preparations are going on smoothly, Zhang said, all parties concerned
have basically reached a consensus on the main agenda ofthe summit
meeting, and some documents on development and cooperation are expected
to be signed.
Over the past five years, he said, the SCO has completed its
institutional construction and legal framework. "The necessary systems
and mechanisms are all in place, creating conditions and laying a sound
foundation for promoting regional stability and economic development."
The SCO will devote itself to regional economic integration. "Our present
goal is to realize the free flow of commodities, capital, technologies
and services in the region within 20 years,"said Zhang.
The SCO pursues an open policy, but it has not formulated legaldocuments
on accepting new members at present, he added.
Zhang refuted media reports calling the SCO an "oriental NATO,"saying
this is "totally groundless."
The SCO has never sought confrontation with any parties and itsaims have
nothing to do at all with becoming a military bloc. The organization will
continue holding high the banner of peace, cooperation and openness, said
Zhang.
As a founding member, China has played "a very important role" in the
establishment of the SCO and the formation of its aims and principles,
especially the "Shanghai Spirit," which embodies mutual trust and
benefit, equality, respect for cultural diversityand a desire for common
development.
The SCO is the first intergovernmental organization with its headquarters
in China.
Zhang said the remarks of Chinese President Hu Jintao during a joint
interview by journalists of SCO member states on Tuesday showed that the
Chinese leaders attach great importance to the SCO.
They also sent a strong signal to the international community that the
SCO is an organization of peace, cooperation, openness and nonalignment
that is devoted to promoting regional stability, security and development.
The challenges the SCO now faces mainly include the "three forces" of
terrorism, separatism and extremism, as well as drug trafficking,
cross-border crimes and illegal trafficking and sale of weapons, he said.
The SCO member countries also have to deal with the attempts todisturb
the "normal process" of their social, political and economic development,
in addition to poverty reduction, diseases and natural disasters.
On the Iran nuclear issue, Zhang expressed the hope that it would be
properly settled through negotiations and diplomatic efforts.
As all the member countries have agreed to invite the leaders of SCO
observers to attend the summit meeting, the presence of theIranian leader
will not conflict with the international efforts toresolve the Iran
nuclear issue, said Zhang.

Chinanews, May 30 - According to statistics released at the 28th
International Conference on Software Engineering, as China's software
industry has been developing rapidly in recent years, its software
industry volume has increased from RMB59.3 billion (US$7.41 billion) in
2000 to RMB390 billion in 2005, and its global market share has risen to
3.55%, overtaking that of India and South Korea.
Beijing's media reported that China's share in international software
market increased synchronously. The country's software export value was
only US$400 million in 2000, but surged to US$3.59 billion in 2005.
Industrial experts believed that increasingly close convergence of
policies, production, education and research was the main reason of the
high-speed development of China's software industry in recent years. At
present, the group of professional software talents continues to grow
with a volume of 380,000 talents a year.

May 20 - The Chinese government should fix the yuan's exchange rate to
dollar around 8 and avoid sharp appreciation of its currency exchange
rate to prevent market speculation and stabilize the international
environment, Nobel Laureate Robert A. Mundell told a Shanghai audience on
Friday.
Mundell, winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences and a man
who was crowned as the "father of the euro," delivered a keynote speech
at the Shanghai International Financial Center Forum.
"It's better for China to keep the rate where it is and keep it for 10 to
20 years. That's the best guideline for China," said Mundell, a professor
at America's Columbia University.
China ended its decade-old peg to the US dollar in July and adopted a
floating exchange rate based on a basket of currencies.
The yuan has since appreciated by about 3 percent, trading at around 8 to
the US dollar yesterday.
"I would be very surprised to see a 3 percent appreciation of the yuan a
year from now, with the exchange rate falling to 7.8 to dollar. That's
not a good idea," he said.
Substantial revaluation of China's national currency will make it hard
for business investment, aggravate non-performing loans and reward
speculators.
As China is getting to become a bigger player in the world economy,
frequent yuan fluctuations will destabilize Southeast Asia and could be
devastating for some countries, Mundell said.
Robert Aumann, 2005 Nobel Laureate and the other keynote speaker at the
forum, suggested that China should pay more attention to basic science.
"I know engineering is needed in China, but we shouldn't keep the nose
too close to the ground. Investment in pure basic science must go ahead
because you never know what great application it will have decades
later," Aumann said.

Beijing Fuhao Hotel is located in Wangfujing area, the most prosperous,
easy accessible part and the commercial center of Beijing city. The hotel
is 10 minutes drive from Beijing Railway Station, 45 minutes from Beijing
International Airport, and neighbors the Wangfujing Grand Hotel. It is
also across the way of the People's Art Theater and south of China
National Museum of Fine Arts.

The hotel has more than 100 standard suites, which are designed to
fulfill the various tastes of the guests. The facilities in the room are
well-appointed and the room rates are reasonable. Each room has amenities
of 24-hour hotwater, IDD/DDD calls and cable TV programs.

The restaurants in the hotel can satisfy even the most captious taste
buds, where the main cuisines served are Shanghai cuisine and roasted
ducks. The sauna bathroom of hotel processes an area over 700 square
meters, which is ideal for releasing the weariness.
