China's unemployment rate dropped

Chinanews, Beijing, Feb. 1 (By Sun Yuting) - Hu Xiaoyi, spokesperson of
the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, announced at today's press
conference that, in 2004, newly added jobs in urban areas totaled 9.8
million, 9% higher than the 2004 annual goal of nine million and an
increase of 1.3 million over that of 2003.
Hu said that by the end of 2004, China's registered unemployed in urban
areas numbered 8.27 million, translating into an unemployment rate of
4.2%. It was lower than the target of 4.7% projected for 2004 and 0.1
percentage point lower than that of 2003. This was the first decline in
urban unemployment rate China has seen in the recent ten years.
