During the meeting Thursday, Hu Jintao asked the Panchen Lama about the progress of his religious and academic studies and the boy answered for about ten minutes. Hu Jintao encouraged him to learn from his predecessor, the 10th Panchen Lama, and be another model of love for the country and religion. Bainqen Erdini Qoigyijabu was installed as the new Panchen Lama in 1996. He is currently studying middle-school lessons with personal tutors.
